What is the University Grant Commission(UGC)?

What is UGC and how it works. Ugc is a populer word in our country. The name of UGC remains on the tongue of all the students of the University. And they want to know what is UGC? There are many types of questions in our minds but we couldn’t find out he answer of them.When we first time admited to the University or the local institute, all the students want to know where the university / institute is recognized. And they do not get the right information. Occasionally if the students gets enrolled in the Institute then recognition by aicte /UGC is shown. But it is not necessary that the university which is being enrolled should be recognized by Aicte.

History of University Grants Commission

The history of higher education in India is quite old. It has its roots in the 19th century, when Viceroy Lord Macaulay made his recommendations. After that in the twentieth century the University of Inter University was established in 1925, after which the name fell to the Association of Indian Universities (Association of Indian Universities). Under this institution, information exchange of educational, cultural and related areas was started between all the universities. After the independence of India, the foundation of the university education commission was laid in 1948 under the chairmanship of Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan. Under this, it was considered to work on the requirements of education and improvement in education in the country. This commission advised that the University Grants Committee of the East will be reconstructed again. Be a President of this and with him the big academics of the country should also be associated with this committee.


In 1952, the Government took the decision that cases of financial assistance given to Central and other higher education institutions would be brought under the Universities Grants Commission. Thus, on 28 December 1953,the Education Minister Maulana Abul Kalam Azad formally laid the foundations of the University Grants Commission. After this, however, in 1956, the UGC was brought under the government after a special bill passed in Parliament and it was formally considered to be established. The UGC has opened its offices in many places to facilitate its activities at a regional level throughout India. In this process of decentralization, UGC opened its offices in six places in the country.

The University Grants Commission is the initiative of the Indian Central Government. ugc was established in 1956. Almost Indian colleges and universities are accredited by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The University Grants Commission is headquartered in New Delhi.
